"Well-behaved women seldom make history." -Laurel Thatcher Ulrich

It is days like this one that I miss my feminist bubble of a college quite painfully. I really should have predicted this.

It is not fair that I am told that I am having a "temper tantrum" when I express frustration.

It is not fair that I am told "girls are softer than guys" and asked "why this woman is doing a man's job" while working.

It is not fair that a male volunteer should stand behind me as I'm trying to work while repeating, "wrong. wrong. wrong," before turning to his friend and saying, "I just went through this with her." As if a) I'm not the authority figure in the area, b) I was taking too long to do something or doing a poor job (I wasn't) and c)I wasn't even there. I have a name. It's Jenna. They know it.

  1. Hey, Jenna. Stay strong (because you are). I've really enjoyed reading your blog and seeing your pictures of New Orlins. You have brought so much ability and energy to you job there. Enjoy the upcoming visit with your parents.

  3. wtf, even if they wernt your subordinates, just wow. i cant believe this still exists. take pity on them for their ignorance, and know that you are only stronger for having known their weaknesses. you handle things in the most refined, elegant ways. their actions are disgusting.
    btw,
cried a little bit watching that. not even ashamed. boys, no- MEN like that give me hope for the rest of them.

  4. Right now I work in natural construction in El Bolson, Argentina and it feels like everyone has given up on this; men openly laugh sometimes when women try (briefly) to participate before retreating to the kitchen. And this is in the most progressive, socially-conscious town I've yet been to down here. Never fucking give in. This is what a feminist looks like.
